Brooklyn Bridge Forbidden Locks pictures I took during one of my NYC Moments walks across the Brooklyn Bridge. Have you ever walked over this bridge? The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most popular bridges in the world. Walk over while drinking your favorite specialty coffee or tea.
Well, you may have heard that people have been attaching padlocks to the Brooklyn Bridge as a symbol of their love for years now. But did you know that these locks have actually been causing damage to the bridge?

That’s why the locks have been banned since 2016, and why they are now known as “forbidden locks.” The weight of the locks can cause the bridge’s cables to stretch, which can weaken the entire structure. And with over 10,000 locks at one point, you can imagine how much strain that would put on the bridge!

It’s a shame that something meant to be a symbol of love has caused harm to such an iconic structure. But the good news is that there are plenty of other ways to show your love and appreciation for the Brooklyn Bridge – like taking a romantic walk across it at sunset, or simply admiring its beautiful architecture from afar.

Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge Like a Local
I never get tired of walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. Every visit feels a little different. Some mornings, the bridge feels peaceful as the sun rises over the East River. Other afternoons, it fills with visitors from around the world taking photos and enjoying one of the most famous landmarks in New York City.
If this is your first visit, I recommend walking from Manhattan to Brooklyn. You’ll enjoy incredible views of Lower Manhattan behind you while the Brooklyn skyline slowly comes into view. Along the way, you’ll spot the Statue of Liberty, Governors Island, the Manhattan Bridge, and dozens of boats traveling through the East River.

Bring comfortable shoes because you’ll probably stop every few minutes to admire the scenery. That’s completely normal. The Brooklyn Bridge offers some of the best free views in New York City, and every season creates a different experience.

The bridge is especially beautiful during sunrise and just before sunset. Early mornings also mean fewer crowds, making it easier to take great photos without hundreds of people walking into your frame.
If you enjoy photography like I do, take your time. Look beyond the skyline. The bridge itself tells an incredible story through its steel cables, Gothic stone towers, wooden walkway, and constant flow of New Yorkers commuting between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Respect the Brooklyn Bridge for Future Visitors
Many visitors arrive hoping to leave something behind. Some write their names on walls. Others think attaching a lock is harmless. I understand the feeling because everyone wants to remember their visit to New York City.
However, the best way to honor this historic bridge is simply to respect it. The Brooklyn Bridge has connected New Yorkers since 1883. Millions of people walk across it every year. Keeping it clean and safe helps future generations experience the same incredible landmark.

Instead of bringing a lock, create memories another way. Take photos from different angles. You can check my Best NYC Street Photography Spots guide. Capture the bridge during the day and again after sunset. Visit Brooklyn Bridge Park for amazing skyline views. Enjoy a slice of New York pizza once you reach Brooklyn. Sometimes the best souvenirs aren’t attached to a bridge. They’re the stories you bring home.
Continue Exploring Brooklyn After Your Walk
Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge doesn’t have to end your adventure. In fact, it’s only the beginning.
Once you arrive in Brooklyn, you’ll discover some of my favorite neighborhoods in New York City. Walk through DUMBO and admire the cobblestone streets. Stop by Brooklyn Bridge Park for panoramic skyline views. Visit Jane’s Carousel or simply relax along the waterfront.
If you have more time, hop on the subway and explore Williamsburg, Bushwick, or Greenpoint. Each neighborhood has its own personality, unique restaurants, colorful street art, local coffee shops, and independent stores.
One thing I love about New York is how easy it is to explore using the subway. You don’t need a car. Just grab your phone, tap into the subway, and let the city surprise you.
