Staten Island Ferry: Free NYC Views of Statue of Liberty

Last weekend, I hopped on the Staten Island Ferry to enjoy one of the best free activities in New York City. The ride is short, fun, and full of amazing views. If you want to see the city skyline without spending a dime, this is for you.

The ferry leaves from the Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan. Getting there is easy. Take the subway to South Ferry (1 train) or Bowling Green (4 or 5 trains). From there, just follow the signs to the ferry building. It’s a huge terminal, and you’ll see plenty of people waiting for the next ride. Best part? The ride is completely free.

Once you board, head to the right side of the ferry for the best views. As the boat leaves Manhattan, you’ll see the skyline stretch behind you. Tall towers rise in the distance, and the water sparkles in the sunlight. Enjoy this view and make sure you’re having a nice cup of specialty coffee with you.

Soon, the Statue of Liberty comes into view. You don’t need an expensive cruise to see her up close. The ferry sails right past, giving you the perfect angle for photos. I stood by the window and watched everyone raise their phones to capture the moment. It felt special, even though I’ve seen the statue many times.

The ride takes about 25 minutes each way. On board, you’ll notice families, tourists, and even locals who use the ferry as part of their daily commute. The energy is lively but relaxed. On sunny days, the deck is a great spot to feel the breeze.

When you arrive in Staten Island, you can explore if you want, or simply stay on the boat for the return trip. I usually ride back right away. On the way back, sit on the left side for another round of skyline views as Manhattan gets closer and closer.

If you’re visiting New York or just looking for something fun to do, this is a must. It’s free, it’s easy, and the views are unforgettable. Next time you’re in Lower Manhattan, skip the pricey tours and hop on the Staten Island Ferry. You’ll thank yourself for it.
